UK’s Train Ticket Refunds & Train Ticket Changes

When you buy a train ticket from an operator like National Rail, Trainline or Anytrain You can be sure that your ticket will have specific conditions and details on it.

These conditions will outline things like the time restrictions of your ticket, as well as any costs that you might incur if you have to change it or get a refund.


Train tickets are non-refundable and cannot be cancelled once they’ve been purchased.

However, there are some circumstances in which a refund may be provided and operators often have very specific policies about this.

Are there refundable train tickets?

You can get a refund on your train ticket if you have already purchased one and are unable to travel on the date of travel. 

Refundable tickets cost more than normal tickets.

But they also give you peace of mind that in cases where an emergency arises or something else prevents you from travelling on your booked date, your money will be returned to you.

Refunds on rail tickets are only applicable within a certain period after purchasing them. 

For example, some rail companies allow for refunds up to 24 hours after purchase; others require it within three days for domestic journeys and 14 days for international ones. 

Remember that many refund policies differ depending on the route taken and whether or not it is part of an advanced fare (meaning it includes discounts).

How to claim a train ticket refund?

The United Kingdom rail service operates an online refund facility that allows you to claim a refund on your train tickets.

There are several ways to claim a refund:

1. Log in to your account and select the relevant ticket type to submit a claim.

2. Call 0345 300 0245 (National Rail Enquiries) between:

 – 8am and 6pm Monday to Friday

– 8am to 4pm Saturday

– 9am to 5pm Sunday 

From a landline or mobile phone charged at the normal rate for calling 0845 748 4950 (National Rail Enquiries).

3. Visit a staffed station within 28 days of travel and use one of the automated machines located at most staffed stations (these machines don’t accept cash). 

You can also visit the ticket office at any staffed station but please note that not all stations have a ticket office open at all times so check before visiting one in person.

The rail service in the United Kingdom is operated by several companies, including Virgin Trains, First Great Western, and CrossCountry.

Passengers who have purchased train tickets through any of these companies can claim a refund if they decide not to travel. 

In this case, they should contact Customer Services at the earliest and request a refund.

The procedure to claim a refund is similar for all the rail services in the UK. 

Here is a step-by-step guide:

1. Contact Customer Services at least 24 hours before your journey to cancel your ticket. 

If you fail to do so, you may still be charged for an unused ticket.

Have proof of purchase – this is usually in the form of an e-ticket or paper ticket. You can also get proof of purchase by contacting customer services on the number provided on your ticket or online through their website; or

Have proof of travel – if you don’t have proof of purchase but did travel on the service, then you can use one of these options instead: 

Written confirmation from another person who travelled with you or witnessed your journey; 

Or A written confirmation from an independent witness who saw you board or alight from the train together; 

Or An email from yourself confirming that you did not travel (you must have sent it before boarding).

You can claim a refund on UK rail for tickets that were purchased before the date of travel.

You can claim a refund for your ticket if you did not arrive at your destination on the scheduled date.

The train was delayed by more than 30 minutes and you did not use it.

Can you get a refund for the train tickets?

You can refund your train ticket in the following circumstances:

If you make a mistake when buying your ticket

If you’ve lost the ticket and need to print another one

If you have a refundable advance ticket and the train is delayed by more than 30 minutes

If you don’t want to travel and want to cancel your reservation before departure.

If you have a non-refundable advance ticket and miss your train, there’s no way to get your money back as it’s not possible to sell or exchange non-refundable tickets. 

If this happens, simply take out a new ticket at the station or online before you travel again.

Can I get a train ticket refund at the station?

Yes, the amount of money you get back will depend on how far in advance you bought your ticket, and whether the train is full or not.

If you want to get your train ticket refunded, then you should follow these steps:

Go to the ticket desk of your train station.

Ask for a refund for your United Kingdom train ticket.

You will be asked to fill out a form and show some identification so that they can verify who you are and why you need a refund on your United Kingdom train ticket.

Can you get a refund on Virgin Train tickets?

Yes, you can get a refund on Virgin Train tickets. 

If you bought your ticket from Virgin Trains, then you can request a refund directly from them.

If you bought your ticket from another retailer, such as Ticketmaster or Trainline, then you should contact them directly for any refunds.

The company states that you can’t get a refund on any ticket bought more than seven days before the departure date. 

So if you buy a ticket on the day of travel, there’s no way to get a refund.

But if you’ve bought your ticket more than seven days before the journey and your plans change, Virgin Trains will consider giving you a refund if:

You’re travelling outside of peak times (Monday-Friday before 9am or after 5pm) and it’s at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time

The train is delayed by 30 minutes or longer

You have an Annual Season Ticket and wish to cancel your journey within 14 days of purchase.

If you want to get your money back and are not sure where the ticket was purchased, then call Virgin Trains customer services on 0345 3000 250 and they will be able to help you out.

Can you get a refund on a train season ticket?

With some train companies, you can get a refund on a train season ticket if you’re transferring to another line. 

However, not all season tickets are eligible. 

So if you have a season ticket, it’s worth checking with the rail company first before buying your ticket.

If you’re transferring to another line that’s part of the same franchise (for example, Thameslink and Great Northern services), then most train operators will allow you to swap your old season ticket for a new one. 

As long as the new journey is within the validity period of your old ticket, this should be possible without any additional cost.

To do this, you’ll need to contact customer services before purchasing your new ticket. 

You’ll need to provide proof of ID and details on both journeys (including dates and times). 

If you’re using an older paper ticket as proof of purchase, make sure it doesn’t have any tear-off slips or stickers attached; 

These will be removed by customer services before they issue their new one.

How to claim compensation for the delayed train?

First of all, you need to check whether your train has been delayed or not. 

If it has been delayed by more than 30 minutes then you will be able to claim compensation.

You can also check on their website and see whether there are any updates regarding your train’s status or not. 

In case you find that there is no update regarding your train’s journey status then you can call up their customer care number and ask about it. 

They will tell you whether or not your train has been delayed and if so by how much time it has been delayed.

Can you change train tickets?

Yes, you can change your UK train ticket for free. 

But the new ticket will be for the same journey and date as the original ticket.

You’ll need to pay a £10 administration fee if you’re changing your train from one that was booked online, though.

The only way to do this is in person at a staffed station or at a self-service ticket machine. You can’t do it over the phone or online.

Are advance single train tickets refundable?

Yes, but only if the ticket has been paid for in full. 

If you have not yet purchased your ticket, you can cancel your booking online or at the station. 

If you’ve already purchased your ticket, there’s no way to cancel it or get a refund – although you can change your travel plans.
